Hello Ian, welcome to this user forum.
Some questions first:
What media are you trying to install ATIH 2016 from?
Did you receive this on a CD, or as a downloadable program installation executable?
Are you performing the installation using 'Run as Administrator'?
How far into the installation does it get before giving the 'Fatal error' message?

There should be no problem with installing ATIH 2016 on Windows 10, I have done so multiple times personally plus lots of other users have done the same.
Have you got a full serial number for your ATIH 2016 product (either received with the CD if on that media, or by email if downloaded) - if so, then I would recommend going to http://www.acronis.com/ and registering your product serial number to your Acronis Account if you have one, or else sign up for a new account https://account.acronis.com/signup and register your serial number to that account. This will allow you to download a fresh copy of the installation program in case the one you are using is corrupted in some way.
If the current failed installation of ATIH 2016 has left programs or data behind that could stop a clean install of the program from happening, I would recommend downloading and using the Acronis Cleanup Tool and using this to completely clean out any data before attempting a new clean installation. Note: although the Cleanup Tool refers to the 2015 version of ATIH, it works fine with the 2016 version too. I used it myself earlier this week.

I'd also like to ask if Acronis was ever installed on the system - perhaps this is an upgrade and/or an older version of Acronis was installed on the OS at some point in time? If so, the Acronis cleanup tool is highly recommened. I'd also then check for leftover folders and manually delete those if they exist and then reboot before re-installing with the most current version downloaded from the online account and then make sure the installer is run by right clicking on it and selecting 'run as administrator' - even if alredy logged in with an admin account.
Please refer to this post for some additional guidance and steps to verify that Acronis is removed from the system...

Thank you both for your help. I am using a downloaded programme link (exe file - 'AcronisTrueImage2016_web.exe, 5.1MB). Yes I am running as an administrator. The installation runs through a download to completion, It then says, 'Unpacking installer files' which it does. Next is the installer window which seems to run right through to completion but then has that error message, 'Installation has failed. Fatal error during installation.'
I had a product number but on your advice, Steve, I followed the link and now have a full serial number. The uninstall utility link that you kindly provided says, ' run the installation file of the product that you want to uninstall and select the option Remove.' Unfortunately, since it will never install in the first place, I never get to the point where I can use the uninstall tool.
Bobbo, as far as I know Acronis has never been installed on this system. It certainly does not feature in the 'installed programs' list that Windows provides for add / remove.
I'm currently in a catch 22 situation of wanting to do a clean install of Windows 10 but needing to backup everything first. However I cannot back everything up so am delaying the clean install. I had hoped that this programme would enable me to clone the C drive and back up all the data, photos, etc on other partitions fist.
Thank you again for your responses. Until I know what to do I think the best way forward may be for me to copy and paste data to other drives / media. Any further thoughts would be most welcome.

Ian,
I think you have a valid support case here - assuming this is an official Acronis installer and not a third party one from say WD or another drive manufacturer. Please reach out to Acronis technical support and open a case with them. Hopefully they can get you sorted out.

Ian, you can just run the Acronis Cleanup Tool directly and it will find and remove any remnants of all Acronis products that may still be present on your computer. Once you have done that, you should then be able to try to install ATIH 2016 again, but I would recommend using a copy of the program from the Acronis web site via your 'My Account' options on the site where you will find a full version of the installer, not just a web 'stub' version.
The full version of the software: AcronisTrueImage2016_6027.exe is 404MB in size (414,169KB) and is available in the Downloads area of your Acronis Account, along with other downloads such as Media Addons (required to create WinPE Rescue Media), standard Linux based Rescue Media ISO file image (to burn to CD) and the Acronis Universal Restore additional software (used for moving backup images to dissimiliar hardware).
ATIH 2016 can be used to do what you need it to do, including cloning your entire system to a new hard drive etc.
Please take a good browse through the ATIH 2016 User Guide for information on using the features of this program.
Note: One option you can use is to create the ATIH 2016 bootable rescue media on CD or DVD then test that you can boot your system from this and see both your internal disk drives and also your external disk drive you want to backup to. If all looks good, you can create a full system backup image in this 'offline' mode of working, outside of any interference from Windows, Antivirus etc.

Thank you again. I am a bit too tired to start this tonight but will come back to this again, when work allows, this week. I do appreciate your helpfulness.

Hello again.
It's a busy week at work so I'm just coming back to this now. I've just tried using the full version of the installation, the 404MB one, but unfortunately got the same outcome. I will try using the cleanup tool next and then run again.

I have now run the uninstall tool, including checking the registry items listed in the instructions, but unfortunately still get a similar result when I try to install Acronis. The installer bar goes about 2/3 of the way across and then I get the same error message.
It's looking like contacting support is the next thing to do, but I've not been at home when the 'live' chat style support is available so far this week. I might have to leave it until the weekend now. :(
Thank you for your ideas. I appreciate your help even though the problem is still unsolved.

One further thing I could have mentioned. I also ordered the Acronis cd when I bought the software last weekend, so maybe that will arrive and I can try with that, although I'm not very hopeful at this stage.

Try disabling any anti-virus apps installed on your machine and then run the installer again. Such apps are known on some machines to cause installation failure.

Derbyian,
If you're unable to get chat support going at the moment, defintely open an email case to at least get it started. You definitely have a valid support case with the installation not working.
I can't find the forum post at the moment, but there was another poster with a similar issue. They ran the clean tool, they checked for the recommended keys, they looked for leftover folders and deleted them and still had issues like you. Ultimately, they did a registry search for 'Acronis' and deleted every single one manually (after removing the application and rebooting). Ultimately that allowed them to install the application, but no idea what the root problem key/keys really were. In their case though, they had upgraded ATIH several times over from previous versions and something was left over fromlong ago.
Before going buck wild in the registry (back it up if you do thoug!), perhaps run the clean tool one more time, then the previous clean tool as well, then check for leftover folders and remove those, and reboot and try again making sure to install with 'run as administrator'. I'm hoping that runnig both clean tools may catch whatever else is still haning on in the registry and will allow things to move forward.
